Reference Dependence and Labor-Market Fluctuations∗

چکیده
We incorporate reference-dependent worker behavior into a search-matching model of the labor market, in which firms have all the bargaining power and productivity follows a log-linear AR(1) process. Motivated by Akerlof (1982) and Bewley (1999), we assume that existing workers’ output falls stochastically from its normal level when their wage falls below a "reference point", which (following Kőszegi and Rabin (2006)) is equal to their lagged-expected wage. We formulate the model game-theoretically and show that it has a unique subgame perfect equilibrium that exhibits the following properties: existing workers experience downward wage rigidity, as well as destruction of output following negative shocks due to layoffs or loss of morale; newly hired workers earn relatively flexible wages, but not as much as in the benchmark without reference dependence; market tightness is more volatile than under this benchmark. We relate these findings to the debate over the “Shimer puzzle” (Shimer (2005)). ∗Spiegler acknowledges financial support from the European Research Council, Grant no. 230251. حسابداری چرخههای تجاری: رکود تورمی ایران
This paper employs a quantitative business cycle approach to study the main causes of recent stagnation in Iran. Four wedges as investment, labor, productivity, and government spending are separately computed in a general equilibrium framework. These wedges, respectively represent the existing frictions in efficiency, labor market, investment and government spending; they are introduced separat...

Today, unemployment has become a major problem in national level as well as in Yazd Province. The presence of high unemployment has caused considerable amount of wastage of active human resources of the society which otherwise could have been used in various prosperous activities. متن کاملCostly external finance and labor market dynamics
We study the role of agency frictions and costly external finance in cyclical labor market dynamics, with a focus on how credit-market frictions may amplify aggregate TFP shocks. The main result is that aggregate TFP shocks lead to large fluctuations of labor market quantities if the model is calibrated to the empirically observed countercyclicality of the finance premium. A financial accelerat...
متن کاملLabor Market Institutions and Aggregate Fluctuations in a Search and Matching Model
This paper explores the influence of labor market institutions on aggregate fluctuations. It uses a dynamic, stochastic, general equilibrium model characterized by search and matching frictions in the labor market and nominal rigidities in the goods market. It finds that firing costs and unemployment benefits can have substantial effects on aggregate fluctuations. Increasing firing costs decrea...
متن کاملState dependence in youth labor market experiences, and the evaluation of policy interventions
We investigate the extent and type of state dependence in labor market outcomes for young low-skilled Australians. Our model allows for three labor force states, employment, unemployment and out of the labor force, and for observed and unobserved heterogeneity. We find evidence of occurrence dependence, but no lagged duration dependence. A past employment spell increases the probability of emplo...
